I recently asked myself a question – “if I could become anything I wanted, what would I be?” This may seem like an easy question to answer to most, but some of us have been hardwired by adversity and the desperate need for survival to pick careers and business ideas that provide some semblance of security. So we choose the first thing that offers the hope of a stable and predictable income in the shortest time possible.
We need to put food on the table, so we pounce on the closest thing that will make that happen. Sometimes, it’s our social circles that make the decision for us. You come from a long line of investment bankers and must carry on the tradition – forget all this talk about opening a bakery or art studio.
While I was pondering my answer to the “what career would I choose?” question, two Scriptures dropped into my spirit;
Proverbs 18:16
[16]A man’s gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men.
Proverbs 22:29
[29]Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men.
Suddenly, everything became crystal clear. You see, true success can never be built solely on desperation, people pleasing, or following trends. It demands passion, excellence, consistency, and talent. A job, qualification, or business in an area you’re at best mediocre in may help you get by, but it won’t usher you into corridors of greatness like your talent will.

Your gifting coupled with discipline and a genuine desire to learn and grow will make you a force to reckon with. Don’t estimate the power of that baking, carpentry, interior design, or painting talent to change not only your life but that of others – in the most beautiful way. When did you stop dreaming? This is your sign to start again.
If you haven’t done this already, grab a pen and paper, sit down and ask yourself:
• what are my strengths?
• what would I do joyfully even if I never got paid for it?
• what do I receive the most compliments for?
If you can honestly answer these questions, you’re well on your way to finding that glorious place where passion, purpose, and profit intersect.
Here’s to a fulfilling and life-changing year!
